Extreme Farming

We tend to jump into the deep end when starting new adventures, and farming has been no exception. When we moved back to the States after living overseas, I was literally Googling “how to be a farmer” on the flight to Maryland. We had a vineyard in mind from the beginning, but along the way we added a few more ideas to the list—because… why not?

“COVID is awful, I want to grow thousands of cut flowers.”
“And lavender—what about a huge field of lavender like we saw in France?”
“And maybe a still so we can make lavender products?”

That was the general tone of our conversations through the long COVID winter of 2020.

Fast forward to late June 2021, and somehow those winter ideas are now real. The greenhouse is full of gorgeous blooms, rows of cut flowers are growing in the field, and nearly 500 baby lavender plants are soaking up the sunshine. We’re not entirely sure how it all came together so quickly—especially while juggling our day jobs—but we’re grateful it did.
