When Margie (formerly known as Margurita) arrived on our farm in June 2023 she was hiding a secret. Margy was part of a mobile petting zoo and was more than done with that life. We took her in for a peaceful retirement on the farm. She looked a little chonky but didn’t think anything of it as we knew very little about donkeys at that time. We had her vaccinated and checked out by our vet in July. The vet did a sonogram and said “she’s just fat!”

The sonogram didn’t detect a growing baby

The vet said donkeys hide their pregnancies well
It was a Thursday afternoon in late October. I was working in my soap workshop and glanced out the window to the pasture when I saw Margy grazing in the shade. I spotted more than four donkey legs! Looking closer 👀 I see two donkeys! I run out the door and into the pasture while calling Jeff who is at a Farmers Market in DC, “Margy had a baby!!!!” I approach Margy slowly and tell her what a good job she did, she lets me know she trusts me, allows me come closer. She noses me and accepts some pets then returns to a her beautiful little girl. I’m sobbing, taking pics and telling Jeff all the details.

This little fuzzy foal is absolutely beautiful, perfectly formed and exploring her new world. I named her Daisy.
Margy refused to move from her location, so I. Brought bucket of water and some hay to her shady spot. She drank an entire bucket and ate a little hay.

The next day Margy moved from her spot and brought Daisy to her shelter. I couldn’t help but watch them on camera.

Witnessing this beautiful event happen on our farm is one of the highlights of my life. The joy the animals bring into our lives is hard to describe.
